After a summer of hit after hit and a successful tour, Rihanna returned to the studio and recorded her latest album, Unapologetic. Released on November 19th, 2012, it is hard to believe this is the 24-year-olds 7th studio album. The first single off the album, which has already been a highly downloaded ringtone, was released on September 27th 2012, is called "Diamonds."
The song takes a departure from her more recent, high energy dance hits. It has a more mellow sound, combining both pop and electronic music. The sensuous and uplifting lyrics of the song are accompanied by her infamous sultry voice, which wows in this song. The lyrics bring out a softer, more loving side out of Rihanna as she sings, "Find light in the beautiful sea, a vision of ecstasy, when you hold me, I'm alive, we're like diamonds in the sky." Though she has released love songs in the past, this is certainly one of her more positive ones. "It's happy and hippy rather than dancey. It's laid-back but it's hopeful. It's a record that gives me such a great feeling when I listen to it. The lyrics are very hopeful and positive, but it's about love," said Rihanna. (digitalspy.com)
It is written by Sia Furler, Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen (who are also known as StarGate), and produced by Blanco, Eriksen and Hermansen. Although StarGate had previously worked with Rihanna, producing her previous hits, "Don't Stop the Music" and "Only Girl (In the World)", they wanted to create something different for the pop star. Something they said "wasn't Rihanna." When Rihanna first heard the song, it was clear she loved it. "She's flippin' out. She played it like seven times in a row. It's her favorite song," said StarGate. (thesource.com)
It seems her fans love "Diamonds" as well. Aside from being a popular ringtone, It has already shot to number one in 12 countries, making this her 12th number one single. It debuted at number 16 in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100, selling 133,000 copies. After a few weeks, it shot to number eight, making it her 23rd top ten single. It has also become the number one most downloaded iTunes track in 15 countries, which includes France, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Norway and Bulgaria. Rihanna was so happy about the success on iTunes, she Tweeted, "I'm floored and humbled! Thanks to everybody y'all are the greatest." (mtv.co.uk)
